Hey, West, lots going on. Below are brief announcments; ask your RAs and HAC members for more details.

Student Committees: West in Vandy, West Faculty Relations, West Community Engagement, and West Food and Celebration Committees are now finalized. Committees will be posted soon on the West page on CommonPlace. Pass along your great ideas to these committees members.

M Nov 2: 7 PM, Dean’s Book Club, discussion of Jesus’ Son (Johnson). This is a quirky and very quick read. If you want to borrow my copy, holler, there really is still time.

M Nov 2: 8 PM, Ambrosia Project, seminar room, discussion about Vandy image led by members of Greek organizations.

M Nov 2: 9 PM, seminar room, West’s Greek Ambassador for sororities, Diana Culp, to speak about this Saturday’s event

T Nov 3: 9 PM, our very own West 4 RA Madeline Myers, seminar room. Madeline will discuss lessons learned from her first-year experience in a program geared toward becoming organized, finding a balance, and making your mark on Vanderbilt! [I am definitely coming to learn from this very involved and organizational wizard!]

W Nov 4: 9 PM, Give Me a Break: Launching The 2009–2010 West Epic Poem. We’re all going to be poets! Come hear details from Zachary Greenberg, Commons Writer in Residence. Zachary will also be looking for a few people to serve on the West Editorial Board in order to shape up the poem, which will be hung in our lobby. This is our faculty-head designated House Participation event for Commons Cup this semester. 4–6 lines from everyone in the House, fun! More info on W. Following Zachary, it’s the announcement of this month’s Community Creed Civility winner, and then it’s game night! Apples to Apples, Mancala, Monopoly.… plus snacks. Swing on by.

W Nov 4: by midnight! West’s going to a Predators (hockey) game against the Red Wings, Sat. Dec 12. Subsidized student tickets are $10. If you want to go, you MUST get your $10 to Bakh by this W at midnight. If he’s not in his room, slip under his door with your name. If you want to go and can’t afford, let me or Bakh know.

F Nov 6, 6 PM: Relay for Life. We’ve got 26 people signed up and welcome more! See Peter Stultz if interested. If you want to camp out overnight, also see Peter.

Sat Nov 7: 8:30 AM - 1. Edgehill Harvest Celebration got rained out yesterday, so we’re on for this Saturday. Reaping, tilling, and eating. Fun! Leave the lobby at 8:30.

Sun Nov 8: 11:30 AM: catered lunch for House Staff, House Advisory Council, and House Student Committee members. Seminar room.

Sun Nov 8, 2 PM, Commons Dining Room upper level, Commons Chef info session. Each House can only have 2–5 chefs, BUT: everyone interested can be involved. Each House will be given the same set of 4 ingredients to cook with, and a stocked pantry to bring clarity to your culinary creativity. Are you ready to whisk it all? Come to this meeting to get details.

When registering for classes, be sure to consider a Commons Seminar. These are fun, out-of-the-box, 1 credit seminars offered only to first-year students. See Common Place for a list of offerings.

West is rocking in Commons Cup competitions, yay for us!

What a great week ahead. Oh yeah, and classes and papers and exams, too! I can assure you that faculty are feeling it, as well. Pick and choose wisely, but hope to see you all at some point during the week.

West love,

Dr. B.
